Jazz in the Heart of Spruce

Following a gift of a huge piece of spruce wood received from an acquaintance who had to stop carving because of her health problems. This sculpture is a tribute to these men and women who have left their mark on our thoughts and hearts through various artistic performances. The works still bear witness to them, they are memory aids.

Thus, the ghostly character playing his instrument here marks so much his presence by the emptiness that the instrument seems almost secondary.

The double bass thus symbolizes the work. The original form of the wood piece already invited a stylization and different shades of brown, thus underlining the joy that art brings. The raw texture of the wood was kept to illustrate the origins of the work not yet subjected to creative transformations.

But it is more the hat and the pine hands that dominate the instrument by this void filled with a funny presence. We can see and almost hear the character playing.

It is an acknowledgment to these departed artists, whatever their arts, and who continue to vibrate in the here and now.
